I have been teaching basic photo editing in one of the libraries for 3 summers now. The first lesson I teach them is Levels. Why? Because it is the most basic, simplest and easiest tool to learn. You can take your photo to this:

Notice how details were brought out from the shadowed tree and middle buildings. If you know Levels, the too-dark-photos (underexposed) still have hope.
